Wall-E Movie Review related to Human-Computer Interaction

Theatrical release poster

The film is set in 2805 and 98 minutes of duration tells the story of a robot named WALL-E, who is designed to clean up a waste-covered Earth far in the future. He falls in love with another robot named EVE, who also has a programmed task, and follows her into outer space on an adventure that changes the destiny of both his kind and humanity. Both robots exhibit an appearance of free will and emotions similar to humans. Condition of the earth at that time has been destroyed because of the buildup of trash and the planet became too toxic to sustain life, forcing humanity to remain in space. Therefore humanity fled to BnL starliner Axiom in space.

BnL starliner Axiom

Inside the starliner Axiom, humanity has lived about 600 years ever. They are spoiled by a computer system that works on there. They are spoiled by a computer system that works on starliner Axiom in which all human movements or activities assisted by computer. However, over the time, humanity increasingly depends on computer systems that allow the existence of everything till the human being lazy to do something with their own business. Without the help from system of computers, they can’t do anything. In terms, the computer controls the human and not the human who controls the computers as they should do.

Illustrated in this film that people have been hung entire their life on a computer system. Captain B. McCrea, was captain of the BnL starliner Axiom. He was leaving control of the Axiom to its robotic autopilot, Auto. So also with his daily routine carried out by the computer system.

Auto and The Captain

On the Axiom, the ship's human passengers have suffered from severe bone loss and become morbidly obese after centuries of living in microgravity and relying on the ship's automated systems. They interacting with the other through a computer, even they are next to each other. In the real world this might be easier for us to communicate with each other, but in this film shows how the ease of access is misused. Habits and their psychology has damaged by the convenience that provided by the system of computer.

This certainly violates the rules of interaction between humans and computers that really are. The function or the purpose of a computer system is supposed to help people work and make it more lightly. Not to do all human needs. Humans control the computer and not a computer that controls humans. For examples of robot wall-e and Eve that remain on their program settings. They carry out their duties as they should. Unlike Auto, which makes people even the captain was under his control.

Eve and Wall-E

However, at the end of the film has been proved that human beings are ultimately controlled the computer system. One of the women who were on Axiom, Mary, realized an important thing after she fell from an automatic chair that was hit by Wall-e. She realized that she had only lived under the control of computer system. There are other things far more wonderful that she can see without influence the power of system computer. As met with John, the man who had only she had met through the virtual world.

Wall-E and friends

Captain B. McCrea finally realized that he and several leaders of the previous ship under control of Auto, robot controllers the carrier Axiom. He realized that he had been fooled by the Auto and does the rebellion along with Wall-E and Eve. Captain’s actions who were trying desperately to seize the power from Auto take the attention from the ship's human passengers. And finally they are able to take over the control of the Axiom from Auto.

The more sophisticated the computer system is designed and made by human, it will eventually work in accordance with the human command. A computer is made to assist some of the work and enable people to solve a problem. A computer is not made to make a human as its slave. A mistake if the interaction is misinterpreted by human who want everything very practical to rely on a computer system. Therefore, the science that discusses about relationship between human and computer interactions has an important role in this regard. Humans need to know their role in controlling a computer because in all high-tech era, the existence of the computer system is playing a major role in human life.
